starting with why.

as i lean in (if only mentally) to the 14 day cleanse that starts in one week, i begin thinking about my why. ti caudron, creator and trainer of vitaliti wellness programs, always asks the class on day one to state their why, their intention for doing the cleanse, their purpose for showing up. i remember somebody saying once that she was doing the cleanse to be an example for her daughter. ti asked her to think about it and find a why that was strong enough to stand on its own. a 30 day detoxification is no joke. nor is the 14 day version that i’m about to undertake myself. if my underlying reason for taking on the challenge isn't solid, every time i come up against myself, it will be that much harder to stand my ground.

modeling for bobbepin is miss jessica ng. bobbepin is an oakland-based, woman-owned online boutique who seek out semi-local, independently-run fashion designers and market the goods online and at fashion fairs and local events in the bay area. jessica is a friend you've met before; a beautiful lady, a budding photographer, and a pleasure to work with.

my girl jess asked me to shoot her so she could build a modeling portfolio. i scoped out possible locations and decided to start in west oakland and later head downtown. props to our two obliging assistants, without whom we would neither have gotten the top of the jeep nor made so many new friends.

san franciso federal building

i've wanted to photograph this building for a long time. it's my...second favorite of morphosis' buildings. after the cooper union building in new york. not how i imagined capturing it, but i was quite interested in the interior and i was motioned not to be a man inside. apparently, it is against the laws to photograph federal buildings? it is clear where our priorities are with design in the us. i didn't manage to even get inside of here, unlike i did at cooper union, but i did get a photo inside, unlike at cooper union.

new hood

i have put a deposit on a studio space in jack london in oakland. i’ll go next week to sign the lease and can occupy the space on 15 march.

i was asked for an image to add to the website, and as i perused my future neighbors, i recognized a jewelrymaker from the popuphood scene, an idea that started here in oakland as a way to both build and connect the community via artists/makers/do-ers and revitalize a city in a more…sustaining way than has been attempted.

just when i was wondering how…i’ve suddenly landed in somewhere along the outskirts of this community of people making things and making things happen. respect.
